The NPTE's length is one of the first things students ask about, and one of the most misquoted. Here are the exact numbers from FSBPT's Candidate Handbook, and what they mean for how you pace yourself on the day.

How many questions are on the NPTE?

The NPTE-PT has 225 multiple-choice questions, split into five sections of 45. Only 180 of those questions are scored. The other 45 are unscored pretest questions that FSBPT is trialing for future exams, and you can't tell which ones they are. You get five hours of testing time for all 225.

Those numbers are in the NPTE Candidate Handbook. The physical therapist assistant exam is shorter:

How long is the NPTE?

You get five hours of testing time. The full appointment runs five and a half hours, because it also includes a short tutorial before you start (which doesn't count against your exam time), the scheduled break, and a post-exam survey. Add check-in, and plan to be at the Prometric center for about six hours.

How much time do you get per question?

Five hours for 225 questions works out to 80 seconds per question on average (300 minutes ÷ 225), or 60 minutes per 45-question section. The NPTE clock runs as one block for the whole exam, so time you save in one section carries over to the next, but any optional break you take is deducted from it.

Scenario questions, which share a longer clinical case, take longer to read, and they sit at the end of each section. Leave yourself room for them.

How do breaks work on the NPTE?

  • One scheduled 15-minute break after section 2. It isn't deducted from your exam time. If you take longer than 15 minutes, the exam clock starts running again.
  • Optional breaks after sections 1, 3 and 4. Any time you take comes off your overall exam time.
  • Breaks happen only at the break screen. You sign out and give a digital fingerprint, and you have to stay at the test site.
  • No phone, even on a break. FSBPT has a zero-tolerance policy: accessing your phone ends the exam, and the attempt counts toward your lifetime limit.

What kinds of questions are on the NPTE?

Every question is multiple choice with one best answer. Some are stand-alone questions, a few with a graphic or video. Others are scenario-based: a shared clinical case followed by two to five questions. On the PT exam, up to 40 questions can be scenario-based. FSBPT notes that scenario questions are independent of each other. They can be answered in any order, and missing one doesn't make you more likely to miss another.

What's in the questions follows FSBPT's NPTE content outline: musculoskeletal (44–54 scored items) and neuromuscular (39–48) lead, followed by cardiopulmonary, the smaller body systems, system interactions and five non-system areas.

Section rules that affect your strategy

  1. You can move around within a section and mark questions to come back to.
  2. Once you end a section, it's closed. You can't return to any question in it. Before ending a section, check you've answered everything you marked.
  3. There's no penalty for wrong answers. Never leave a question blank.
  4. Don't skip a section by accident. Read the on-screen alerts. FSBPT recommends practicing navigation on its free NPTE Demonstration Examination.

How many questions do you need to get right to pass?

FSBPT doesn't publish a fixed number. Your correct answers on the 180 scored questions are converted to a scaled score from 200 to 800, and you need 600. Because forms differ slightly in difficulty, the raw number needed for 600 changes a little from form to form, "generally within a one to two question range," according to FSBPT. Frequently asked questions

Are all 225 NPTE questions scored?

No. 180 are scored and 45 are unscored pretest questions. They're mixed in with the scored questions and aren't identified, so answer every question as if it counts.

Is the NPTE-PTA shorter than the PT exam?

Yes. The NPTE-PTA has 180 questions (140 scored) in four sections, with four hours of testing time.

Can I go back to earlier questions on the NPTE?

Only within the section you're working on. Once you end a section, you can't return to it.

Is each NPTE section timed separately?

No. The five hours are one block of time for the whole exam, so you can use it as you wish across sections. The exam ends when that time runs out.

How long is the NPTE break?

There's one scheduled 15-minute break after section 2 that doesn't count against your exam time. Breaks after other sections are allowed, but that time is deducted from your exam clock.
