Registering for the NPTE involves two organizations, your state board and FSBPT, then a third, Prometric, to book your seat. Missing a single deadline pushes you back three months. Here's the process in the order you'll do it.
How do you register for the NPTE?
Apply for licensure with the state board where you want to practice, complete your FSBPT profile, then register and pay the $485 NPTE fee on your FSBPT dashboard before the registration deadline. Once your state (or FSBPT, in Alternate Approval Pathway states) approves you, FSBPT emails an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter, and you schedule your seat at Prometric.
FSBPT calls licensing "a two-step process": the state application first, then exam registration (FSBPT Exam Registration & Payment). Everything below follows the NPTE Candidate Handbook.
Step 1: Apply to your state licensing board
Every state sets its own licensure requirements, fees and timelines, and they're separate from FSBPT's. Start with the board in the state where you plan to practice: ask for the application, required documents (such as transcripts), and any state-specific rules, like whether you can test before graduation or need a jurisdiction exam. FSBPT advises contacting your state before you register.
Step 2: Set up your FSBPT account
- CAPTE-accredited program: your school creates your FSBPT profile. You'll get an email asking you to complete it, and you must complete it before you can access FSBPT exams and services.
- Non-CAPTE program (including most internationally educated candidates): request a profile through the survey on FSBPT's Customer Login page. Without a US Social Security Number, you'll be assigned an alternate ID. Allow three business days.
Start with your personalized Journey Map on the dashboard. FSBPT recommends it as the first step because it lays out the milestones for your own education and state.
Step 3: Register and pay before the deadline
On your dashboard, click the "NPTE" button in the Services area, work through each screen, and pay the $485 fee (plus a 1.6% processing fee, rounded up) by Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Registration and payment must both be complete by 11:59 PM Eastern on the deadline. For example, the January 26–27, 2027 exam requires registration by December 22, 2026. Every deadline is on our NPTE exam dates page (PTA: NPTE-PTA dates).
- CAPTE graduates can't register until the school has validated the graduation date. FSBPT allows testing up to 90 days before graduation, but 12 jurisdictions don't; see the state-by-state rules.
- Non-CAPTE graduates can register at any time, but still need state approval.
- Need accommodations? Indicate it when you register. All documentation is due by the same registration deadline; see NPTE testing accommodations.
Step 4: Get approved to test
Who approves you depends on your state. In Alternate Approval Pathway (AAP) states, FSBPT approves graduates of CAPTE-accredited programs itself, and FSBPT says candidates can usually schedule with Prometric about one day after registering. In other states, and for all non-CAPTE graduates, the state board must approve you by the jurisdiction approval deadline, about a week after the registration deadline.
According to FSBPT's Alternate Approval Pathway page, 31 states currently use AAP. Even in an AAP state, you still have to finish your state licensure application to get licensed after you pass. If your state hasn't approved you by the jurisdiction deadline, your registration closes and your fee is refunded minus $50. State processing times vary, so send your documents early.
Step 5: Read your Authorization to Test letter
Once you're approved (and any accommodation request is decided), FSBPT emails your Authorization to Test (ATT) letter; it's also on your dashboard. Check three things right away:
- Your name. It must exactly match the two IDs you'll bring on test day. If it doesn't, update your FSBPT profile now. On test day, a mismatch means you can't test and you're marked a no-show.
- Your testing window. You can only schedule and reschedule within it.
- The Prometric fee ($112 for PT, $92 for PTA) and scheduling instructions.
Step 6: Schedule at Prometric, fast
Use the scheduling links on your FSBPT dashboard, and pay Prometric's fee when you book. FSBPT's Handbook warns that "Prometric testing centers fill up quickly," so schedule as soon as your ATT arrives. You can test at any Prometric center that offers the NPTE, whatever state you registered for. If you can't find a seat within 250 miles, FSBPT Exam Services can help, and waives its processing fee if you end up withdrawing.
What it costs to register
| Item | PT | PTA |
|---|---|---|
| FSBPT registration | $485 | $485 |
| Processing fee | 1.6%, rounded up | 1.6%, rounded up |
| Prometric sitting fee | $112 | $92 |
| State licensure application | set by state | set by state |
| Refund if not approved in time | fee minus $50 | fee minus $50 |
If you need to change or cancel
- Prometric appointment: free to change 30+ days ahead, $60 at 5–29 days, and the full sitting fee inside 5 days. You can only move within your testing window.
- Withdrawing from FSBPT: a $50 processing fee 30+ days before exam day, or $120 after that. You can take a refund or apply the fee to a future exam. Canceling at Prometric doesn't withdraw you from FSBPT; you must do both.
- Illness: FSBPT makes no exceptions for illness. Withdraw before the window ends to get a partial refund. No-shows don't count toward your attempt limits.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to register for the NPTE?
$485 to FSBPT plus a 1.6% processing fee, then $112 to Prometric for the PT exam ($92 for PTA). Your state board charges its own licensure application fee.
How long does NPTE approval take?
In Alternate Approval Pathway states, FSBPT approves CAPTE graduates itself and says candidates can typically schedule about one day after registering. Elsewhere it depends on your state board's processing time; approval must come by the jurisdiction deadline, about a week after the registration deadline.
What is an ATT letter for the NPTE?
The Authorization to Test letter FSBPT emails once you're approved and paid. It shows your testing window, the name Prometric has for you, the Prometric fee, and how to schedule.
Can I register for the NPTE before I graduate?
If you're at a CAPTE-accredited program, yes, once your school validates your graduation date, for a test date up to 90 days before graduation. Twelve jurisdictions don't allow testing before graduation.
Do I have to take the NPTE in the state where I want a license?
No. You can test at any Prometric center that offers the NPTE. Your score is reported to the jurisdiction you selected when you registered.
